HMRC Reports 758,000 Young Adults Yet to Claim Child Trust Funds

Eligible users can locate their provider through a free GOV.UK service using a National Insurance number in a five-minute application.

Overview

  • The unclaimed pots belong to 18 to 23 year olds with matured accounts worth about £2,242 on average.
  • Child Trust Funds were set up for those born between 1 September 2002 and 2 January 2011, with control from 16 and access at 18.
  • Savings are held by banks, building societies and other providers rather than by government.
  • More than 563,000 people used the locator in the 12 months to August 2025, with September 2024 the busiest month at over 71,000 searches.
  • HMRC says the online request takes about five minutes and most users hear back within three weeks, and National Insurance numbers can be retrieved from the HMRC app.
