HMP Liverpool Contractor Jailed for 20 Months After Sniffer Dog Uncovers Drug Smuggling

The judge imposed a 20-month term to deter staff smuggling.

Overview

  • Paul Heath, 48, an Amey maintenance contractor at Walton prison, was stopped on May 27, 2024 after a detection dog indicated on him, leading to the discovery of cannabis resin hidden in a second pair of trousers.
  • Officers seized 493g of cannabis resin valued at £2,465–£4,930 on the street, with potential worth up to ten times higher inside the prison.
  • Further contraband was found taped to his ankles, £425 in cash was recovered from his rucksack, and a smartphone plus a Nokia handset were located in his locker.
  • Phone messages showed smuggling arrangements dating back to February 2024, including discussions about weapons, and he admitted at least four prior cannabis deliveries.
  • He pleaded guilty to conveying a prohibited article into prison and being concerned in the supply of cannabis, and Judge Andrew Menary KC sentenced him at Liverpool Crown Court after noting his gambling addiction, bereavements and remorse.
