HMP Leyhill Escapees Matthew Armstrong and Daniel Washbourne Arrested After Weeklong Manhunt

One suspect was also detained on suspicion of a robbery reported the night before the escape.

Overview

  • Matthew Armstrong, 35, was arrested near Henley-in-Arden train station by Warwickshire Police shortly before midday after a member of the public reported a sighting.
  • Daniel Washbourne, 40, was detained in Bristol city centre at about 1:30am and was taken to hospital for pre-existing injuries before being moved to custody.
  • Armstrong was also arrested on suspicion of robbery linked to a December 31 incident in a village near HMP Leyhill in which a man allegedly forced entry and took a phone and cash.
  • The pair had absconded from Category D HMP Leyhill on January 1, triggering a multi-force search that used CCTV and public appeals to trace movements in Bristol, Filton and Patchway.
  • A third escapee, Aaron Thomas, 39, was arrested in Bristol on January 3, charged with escaping lawful custody, and has a Crown Court hearing scheduled in February.
