Historic England’s 2025 Heritage at Risk Update: 129 Sites Saved, 138 Added to the List

Historic England credits reuse and local partnerships for recent rescues.

Overview

  • Dr Jenner’s Hut in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, where early smallpox vaccinations were carried out, has been added to the register with urgent repairs needed to its thatched roof, rear wall and chimney.
  • The Brading Roman villa hypocaust on the Isle of Wight is at risk because its Edwardian shelter building requires repair or replacement.
  • At Cromford Mills in Derbyshire, two cottages from around 1780 have been listed in very poor condition, while St Wendreda’s church in March, Cambridgeshire, faces a roof at risk of collapse and an estimated £250,000 repair bill.
  • Norwich’s Mile Cross Gardens and Wensum Park were added after severe deterioration of historic features and ongoing issues with neglect and anti-social behaviour.
  • Sites removed from the register include Bruce Grove public toilets, Augill Smelting Mill, the Old School Coffee House in Barnstaple, Papplewick Pumping Station and Rockingham Kiln, aided by grants such as the government’s £15 million Heritage at Risk Capital Fund.
