Overview

  • The online interactive map featuring landmarks such as Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s Big Dipper, the Jubilee Pool in Penzance and Bamburgh Castle went live on July 17.
  • Launched under Historic England’s Missing Pieces Project and backed by Heritage Minister Baroness Twycross, the platform traces England’s seaside evolution from Victorian piers to mid-20th-century amusement parks.
  • Users can explore both celebrated national icons and regionally significant sites, from Bournemouth’s Boscombe Pier to fifteen selected treasures in Norfolk and Waveney.
  • Historic England chief executive Duncan Wilson encouraged contributions of personal photos, drawings, written accounts or audio recordings to fill gaps in official heritage listings.
  • By weaving first-hand memories into its database, the initiative aims to deepen community stewardship and preserve the cultural significance of England’s coastal towns.
