Overview

  • Protesting postgraduate and doctoral students have had water supply and hostel mess services suspended and were ordered to vacate on grounds of routine maintenance.
  • On June 28, they petitioned the National Human Rights Commission alleging human rights violations by university authorities and police for denying them food and water.
  • Students say police and university officials visited their parents at home, warning that their degrees could be withheld if the sit-in continued.
  • Despite the vice-chancellor’s six-month leave and earlier government assurances, students report no formal written guarantees on their demands.
  • The protesters have vowed to shut down all campus activities from July 2 unless officials formally accept their full list of demands, including disciplinary action and scholarship rule assurances.
