Hinson Seeks Federal Probe of Linn-Mar High Over Student 'Non-Monosexual' Segments

The district says it is reviewing whether policies were violated.

Overview

  • The student-run morning show aired segments on Sept. 23 and 25 for Bisexual Plus Awareness Week that defined non-monosexual identity and listed bisexual, pansexual, fluid, queer and omnisexual.
  • Linn-Mar Spectrum, the school’s Gay–Straight Alliance, produced the content for the school-affiliated announcements program.
  • Rep. Ashley Hinson said the broadcasts were shown without parental knowledge or consent and called the content inappropriate for students.
  • Hinson sent a letter to Education Secretary Linda McMahon requesting a Department of Education investigation, and the department has not publicly commented.
  • The Linn-Mar Community School District said it is conducting an internal review to determine whether policies or procedures were violated, with prior litigation over parental notification providing context.
