Overview

  • Russia’s Defence Ministry confirmed Maj. Gen. Mikhail Gudkov died during combat operations in the Kursk region on July 2.
  • The precision attack hit a forward command post in Korenevo, reportedly using US-made HIMARS missiles.
  • At least 20 other senior Russian officers, including Gudkov’s deputy, were killed in the same strike.
  • Gudkov had been appointed deputy commander of the Russian Navy by President Vladimir Putin in March 2025 and formerly led the Pacific Fleet’s 155th Naval Infantry Brigade.
  • The strike underscores growing concerns over Russia’s command resilience and has prompted Western allies to review future arms shipments.
