Himachal Presses Centre for Doppler Radar, 150 Weather Stations; Seeks Higher Borrowing Limit

The push seeks to close warning gaps before the next monsoon after deadly losses in recent years.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu asked the Union government for one Doppler weather radar and 150 automated weather stations to be deployed before the next monsoon.
  • After meeting MoS Jitendra Singh in New Delhi, the state also sought data integration with national early warning agencies to improve the accuracy and timeliness of alerts.
  • Sukhu requested a seismic laboratory and data analysis centre for the high‑risk KangraHamirpur zone, plus two high‑altitude air monitors, a Hamirpur weather data centre and compact radars for shadow areas.
  • He thanked the Centre for approving a Doppler radar for Lahaul‑Spiti, while Union ministers signaled supportive consideration for further meteorological and disaster‑mitigation infrastructure.
  • In a separate meeting, Sukhu urged Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to raise the state’s additional borrowing limit by two percentage points, citing roughly ₹18,000 crore in disaster losses and 1,321 deaths over three years.
