Himachal Pradesh Moves to Expand Cancer Care, Plans Rs 300-Crore Hamirpur Institute

Overview

  • Himachal ranks second in reported cancer incidence after the North-East, the chief minister told the Assembly.
  • Official data tabled showed 2,428 cases in 2022, 2,362 in 2023 and 1,836 in 2024.
  • PET scan capacity will be introduced in state medical colleges starting this year at IGMC Shimla and Tanda, with Tanda targeted by October and other colleges added in phases.
  • Chemotherapy is available at all district hospitals, with dedicated centres at Mandi and Sarkaghat and services operating in Dharamshala, Palampur, Nurpur, Jai Singhpur and Baijnath, with Rampur and Rohru next.
  • An oncology experts committee is advising the government, and tighter checks on sub-standard pesticides alongside promotion of natural or organic farming were promised.
