Himachal Pradesh Directs Feasibility Studies for Single-Discipline Colleges and Day-Boarding Expansion

Officials have begun construction at eight boarding school sites to prepare for next session reforms.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has ordered the Education Department to conduct detailed studies on setting up specialized science, arts and sports colleges and rationalizing existing institutions for implementation in the next academic year.
  • Construction has started at eight Rajiv Gandhi Day-Boarding School sites under a phased plan to open one in each assembly constituency, with proposals to upgrade 56 more schools into day-boarding institutions.
  • The government has instructed officials to complete grading of colleges, identify emerging subjects aligned with job markets and fill all teaching and administrative vacancies before rolling out reforms.
  • Reform directives build on ASER 2024 findings of improved reading skills and a rise in the National Achievement Survey ranking from 21st in 2021 to fifth nationwide.
  • Planned curriculum changes include incorporating state-specific content, introducing mandatory mock tests and adding a ‘zero period’ to support students’ holistic development.
