Himachal Pradesh Announces School Curriculum Overhaul to Add Disaster, Climate and Local Heritage

Officials plan a soon-to-be-notified expert panel to localize NCERT texts for classes 6–12.

Overview

  • Education Minister Rohit Thakur directed that disaster management, climate change, green energy and sustainable development be embedded across the school syllabus.
  • NCERT textbooks for classes 6–12 will be contextualized with Himachal-specific references to strengthen students’ sense of place and exam readiness.
  • SCERT was told to provide open-access learning materials via its website and portal, including QR codes and digital links for easy use.
  • The minister called for practical, activity-based disaster education and broader experiential learning, with promotion of local languages and removal of irrelevant content.
  • The updated curriculum will foreground Himachal’s heritage and notable figures, including General Zorawar Singh, Wazir Ram Singh Pathania, Dr Y S Parmar, Captain Vikram Batra, Major Somnath Sharma and Captain Saurabh Kalia, with HPU’s vice chancellor voicing support.
