Himachal Expands Medical Training as Internship Stipend Hike Is Considered

The package aims to raise training standards through AI-led teaching, new campus facilities, international placements and strengthened research capacity.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced Tuesday that the state is considering an increase to MBBS internship stipends and will seek budgetary provision for the proposed hike, but the change remains under consideration rather than finalised.
  • Work is already under way at Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College in Hamirpur on a modern amphitheatre, an auditorium, a library and separate hostels for 300 male and 300 female students, and a campus layout was prepared with help from a Japanese firm.
  • The government is prioritising modern technology and artificial intelligence in medical teaching and research, and has introduced measures such as robotic surgery facilities at some colleges and plans for automated laboratories.
  • Selection of students for overseas exposure is nearly complete, with 10 postgraduate and 10 MBBS students from each state medical college to be sent abroad to study best practices.
  • Planned future steps include a super‑speciality block, a cancer hospital, a dental college and a nursing college at Hamirpur, but these projects and the stipend increase will need administrative approvals and funding before they take effect.
