Himachal Dog’s Warning Enables Escape Ahead of Village Landslide

  • On June 26, 63 residents of Siyathi village in Mandi district fled after a dog’s barking alerted them to an imminent landslide that flattened nearly a dozen homes.
  • Displaced families have taken refuge at the nearby Naina Devi temple in Triyambala village and each received ₹10,000 from the Himachal Pradesh government.
  • State authorities report at least 80 deaths and 35 people missing across Himachal Pradesh since the monsoon began on June 20, with 23 flash floods, 19 cloudbursts and 16 landslides recorded.
  • The National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force are conducting statewide search and rescue operations as river levels rise and slopes destabilize.
  • The India Meteorological Department has issued yellow and orange warnings for heavy rainfall and landslide risks in multiple districts through July 10.
