• On June 22, Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue treated a swimmer with leg lacerations consistent with a shark bite at Coligny Beach Park.
• The attack was the island’s second shark bite in six days, following a June 17 incident where a 12-year-old girl sustained nonfatal leg injuries.
• After the June 17 attack, Shore Beach Services and Fire Rescue teams provided onsite care and airlifted the victim to a hospital in Savannah, Georgia.
• Authorities have implemented purple flag warnings for dangerous marine life and rely on real-time wildlife monitoring to clear water areas when sharks or large schools of fish are detected.
• Earlier on June 11, Leah Lendel, 9, lost her hand in a shark bite while snorkeling off Boca Grande, Florida.
