Hillsborough Inquest Hears GP Describe 'Shambles' as Ambulance Firm Defends Response

The Sheffield inquest heard starkly conflicting accounts of the on-site medical response.

Overview

  • Dr Richard Stones testified that he and off-duty paramedic Chelsea Jones performed CPR on Mark Townsend after the 57-year-old collapsed among West Bromwich Albion supporters.
  • He told the court stewards did not fetch a defibrillator when asked, said the first responders had no oxygen, and stated the AED went flat after delivering two shocks.
  • Stones estimated a roughly 10-minute wait for paramedics and described the care as a shambles, while Sheffield Wednesday’s counsel suggested the first team arrived in about four minutes.
  • The hearing was told Townsend was moved to the Leppings Lane concourse, where Stones reported further disorder and said a steward instructed him to step back as he prepared to give drugs.
  • Lambda Medical director Lewis Wright rejected the claims of chaos, called the operation almost textbook, disputed that a defibrillator battery failed, and said a separate NHS crew’s arrival resulted in two teams working on the arrest.
