Overview

  • On May 24, two hikers on Cascade Mountain in New York’s Adirondack High Peaks placed a 911 call claiming their friend had died during a Memorial Day weekend trek
  • A Cascade Summit Steward and Forest Ranger Rob Praczkajlo determined the pair were disoriented after ingesting hallucinogenic mushrooms and had become lost
  • The hiker thought to be dead contacted authorities and was found alive and uninjured back at the group’s campsite
  • Rangers escorted the two hikers under the influence to a waiting ambulance and transferred them to New York State Police for evaluation
  • Officials have confirmed the hikers’ safety but say it remains unclear whether any charges will be filed over the false emergency report
