Hiker Dies Searching for Missing Group in Anza as Four Others Are Rescued

The coroner has opened an investigation, with the hiker’s identity not yet released.

  • Deputies received a report around 8:26–8:30 p.m. Saturday of four hikers overdue near State Route 74 in the Anza area of Riverside County.
  • The Riverside County Sheriff's Aviation Unit and Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit located the group and hoisted them to the Lake Hemet Mountain Station for medical evaluation.
  • A companion who went out alone to look for the group was later found near the base of an approximately 150-foot rock face and was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Rescue teams recovered the body from the remote terrain as the Riverside County Coroner's Bureau assumed the death investigation.
  • Authorities asked anyone with information to contact Deputy Francisco Lopez at the Hemet Sheriff Station at 951-791-3400.
