Hiker Dies Searching for Lost Group in Riverside County After Four Are Rescued

The coroner is investigating the fatal fall, with the hiker's identity withheld.

  • Deputies received a report around 8:26 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday from the 56000 block of East State Highway 74 in Anza about four overdue hikers.
  • The Sheriff's Aviation Unit and Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit located the group by air and hoisted them to the Lake Hemet Mountain Station for medical evaluation.
  • A fifth member who went to look for the group was later found near the base of an approximately 150-foot rock face and was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Rescue teams recovered the body from the remote area, with the Riverside County Coroner's Bureau now leading the investigation.
  • Officials have not released the deceased hiker's name and request tips to Deputy Francisco Lopez at the Hemet Sheriff Station at 951-791-3400.
