Hiker Dies at Zion National Park, Suspected Heart Attack

The 63-year-old man from San Diego was found unresponsive on the West Rim Trail, despite extensive CPR efforts by park rangers and visitors, he could not be revived.

  • A 63-year-old man from San Diego was found unresponsive on the West Rim Trail near Scout Lookout at Zion National Park and later pronounced dead.
  • Park rangers and visitors with medical training performed CPR for nearly an hour and a half, but the man could not be revived.
  • The man is believed to have experienced a heart attack, but the cause of death is still under investigation by the Washington County Sheriff's Office, the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner and the National Park Service.
  • Over 20 search and rescue team members, emergency medical technicians, paramedics and the park’s ambulance were involved in the rescue operation.
  • The West Rim Trail was temporarily closed for rescue operations but has since been reopened.
