Higher Daytime Light Exposure Associated With Lower Dementia Risk

The study suggests increasing daytime light could reduce dementia risk by strengthening circadian rhythms and preserving brain structure.

  • A General Psychiatry paper published June 24, 2026 analyzed 87,577 UK Biobank participants who wore wrist light sensors and found higher daytime light linked with lower dementia over a median 8.1 years of follow-up.
  • Average daytime exposure above 1,000 lux was associated with a 16% lower dementia risk and spending at least 0.70 hours per day at or above 5,000 lux showed a similar reduction.
  • Exploratory mediation analyses indicated that more stable circadian rest–activity rhythms and differences in specific brain structures together explained up to about one third of the observed association.
  • Protective associations were stronger in higher-risk groups, including evening chronotypes, people with high nighttime light, and APOE ε4 carriers, and very low bright-day exposure outperformed several traditional risk predictors in this dataset.
  • The study is observational, used seven days of wrist-level light measures rather than eye-level or long-term monitoring, and drew on a healthier UK Biobank sample, so causation and broad generalizability remain unproven even as practical light-based interventions are suggested.
