High-Security Inmate Recaptured Hours After Daylight Escape From Palmi Prison

Unions called it the fifth prison break in five days, citing chronic staffing gaps, overcrowding.

Overview

  • Marino Massari, 35, a repeat offender linked to Bari’s Strisciuglio clan and the Sacra Corona Unita, was being held under the Alta Sicurezza regime in Palmi.
  • He fled around 14:30 by climbing a perimeter wall about four metres high.
  • He was located a few hours later by the Polizia penitenziaria in countryside near the highway and was returned to custody, after being spotted on a Palmi street.
  • Union chief Gennarino De Fazio described persistent understaffing and harsh working conditions, citing an 18,000-officer shortfall and shifts extending to 26 hours.
  • The incident follows two escapes in Bolzano and two in NaplesPoggioreale this week, with one Bolzano escapee still at large, according to UILPA and ANSA.
