High School Seniors Charged with Murder After Fire Killed Maryland Store Owner

A preliminary hearing is set for June 25 with authorities continuing to probe the motive behind the attack

Police say Edward Stephen Koza, 67, was found dead inside a burned vehicle in a commercial parking lot in Davidsonville in May.

Overview

  • Jonah Michael Poole and Kylee Alyssa Dakes, both 18 and Southern High School students, face charges including first- and second-degree murder, assault, conspiracy and arson in the May 24 death of Edward Stephen Koza
  • Investigators say the pair bound and gagged Koza inside Tropic Bay Aquatic Garden Center then drove his truck to a gas station, doused it with gasoline and set it ablaze with him inside
  • The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled Koza’s death a homicide after an autopsy revealed blunt force trauma to his head
  • Both suspects are held without bail at the Jennifer Road Detention Center and are scheduled for a preliminary hearing on June 25 in Annapolis District Court
  • Poole also faces separate burglary and theft charges over an alleged break-in at the Pirates Cove Restaurant in Galesville that caused more than $6,000 in damages and $11,000 in stolen property
