High Court Restrains Punjab SC Commission From Interfering in Probe Into Raja Warring

Warring argues the commission overstepped its jurisdiction by launching opaque suo motu proceedings during the Tarn Taran bypoll.

Overview

  • Justice Jasgurpreet Singh Puri directed the Punjab State Commission for Scheduled Castes not to obstruct or influence the police investigation into the FIR against Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.
  • The order came as the High Court took up Warring’s petition challenging a commission notice he calls politically motivated and without legal foundation.
  • Warring’s plea says the commission initiated proceedings without disclosing any complaint, documents, statements, recordings or other material, undermining his ability to respond.
  • He also seeks to quash the commission’s November 3 directions that told election and returning officers to act against him and to banish him from Tarn Taran district.
  • The case was re-listed to Justice Puri after Justice Suvir Sehgal recused a day earlier, and it stems from a November 4 FIR over alleged casteist remarks about the late Buta Singh.
