High Court Grants KT Molefe R400,000 Bail, Overturning Magistrate’s Ruling

Judge Brad Wanless found the state offered no objective evidence to justify keeping him in custody.

Overview

  • Molefe must report to Morningside Police Station every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 06:00 and 18:00, is confined to Gauteng, may travel to Welkom with prior written notice, and is barred from contacting state witnesses.
  • Molefe and three co-accused face charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and firearms offenses tied to the 2022 killings of DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards.
  • He was arrested in July while already out on R100,000 bail in a separate case concerning the April 2024 murder of engineer Armand Swart.
  • Police say firearms recovered during the arrests are linked to 18 other murders and attempted murders, and Crime Intelligence has associated Molefe with an alleged Big Five cartel.
  • The National Prosecuting Authority intends to add multiple dockets and have the consolidated matters heard at the Johannesburg High Court.
