Overview

  • Mushtaq Ahmed was arrested on May 17 under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 152 and 197(1)(d) for forwarding AI-generated videos critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah during Operation Sindoor
  • On July 7 Justice N.S. Shekhawat allowed regular bail, noting Ahmed’s serious health complications and need for urgent care after scheduled bypass surgery
  • The court found no material left to recover and determined that further custody would serve no useful purpose as the investigation neared completion
  • Defense lawyers argued the video was mistakenly forwarded, secured Ahmed’s unconditional apology and confirmed he had no suspicious foreign transactions or Pakistan visits since 1990
  • The trial will proceed and challenges to the constitutional validity of the sedition-equivalent BNS provisions remain pending
