Higgins, González Advance to Miami Mayoral Runoff After No Majority Win

Voters return Dec. 9 to decide the city’s next mayor in a low-participation contest.

Overview

  • With 100% of precincts reporting, Eileen Higgins led with 36% (13,325 votes) and Emilio González had 19% (7,214), with no candidate crossing 50% in a 13-person field.
  • The runoff is scheduled for Dec. 9 to choose a mayor whose formal powers are limited to hiring or firing the city manager and vetoing City Commission items.
  • Fewer than 22% of Miami’s 174,462 registered voters cast ballots in the first round.
  • Higgins, a Miami-Dade county commissioner, and González, a former Miami city manager and Miami International Airport CEO, enter the runoff with backing from Daniella Levine Cava and Ron DeSantis, respectively; Higgins would be Miami’s first woman mayor if elected.
  • González previously won a lawsuit that blocked a proposed delay of the municipal elections to 2026, keeping this year’s vote on the calendar.
