Hidden Code Suggests Apple’s HomeView Could Run as a HomeKit Security Camera

Pre-release software strings suggest Apple is testing a camera mode that would stream or record video under strict privacy controls likely to arrive in a later update.

Overview

  • The discovery came from a Reddit code sleuth who examined HomeView Software 27.2 and found localization text that says the display’s built-in camera “can be used as a security camera with HomeKit Secure Video.”
  • The strings define four operating modes — Off, Detect Activity (motion alerts only), Stream (live view only), and Stream & Allow Recording (live view plus automatic recordings) — and let users set different behavior for home, away, and asleep states.
  • Privacy safeguards in the text limit access to household members, require a visible green indicator and an audible sound when streaming or recording starts, and send notifications when Secure Video settings change.
  • Apple has not confirmed the feature and reporters say the presence of the strings shows it is under development in 27.2 rather than guaranteed at launch, with analysts expecting a possible rollout in a later update such as 27.3.
  • If implemented the feature would let HomeView serve as both a smart-home display and an indoor monitor and could close a gap in Apple’s accessory lineup while keeping recordings private to household iCloud accounts.
