Overview

  • HHS notified more than 460 former CDC employees on June 11 that they are being reinstated, according to the union representing the workers.
  • Rehires include 214 positions in the National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and Tuberculosis Prevention; 158 in the National Center for Environmental Health; 71 in the Immediate Office of the Director; and 24 in the CDC’s Global Health Center.
  • The April layoffs had eliminated about 2,400 CDC roles and paused programs targeting smoking, lead poisoning, gun violence, asthma, air quality, and Freedom of Information Act requests.
  • In March, around 180 CDC staff received return notices after a February wave of termination alerts exposed errors in the layoff process.
  • HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. acknowledged that personnel were mistakenly cut and an agency spokesperson said mission-critical public health functions remain intact.
