HHLA Lowers 2026 Profit Forecast After Weak First Half

HHLA says the downgrade was caused by productivity losses including terminal modernisation, rail works, changing liner networks, extreme winter weather.

Overview

  • On Thursday, August 13 HHLA reported H1 results showing container throughput fell 6.7% to 2.959 million TEU, operating profit (EBIT) dropped to €51.3 million and the group posted a net loss of €4.2 million.
  • In response the company cut its full-year EBIT guidance to €150–170 million from €175–195 million while reiterating 2026 investments of €430–480 million with €400–450 million earmarked for port logistics.
  • HHLA said the weak performance stems from productivity losses tied to ongoing terminal modernisation and automation works, major rail infrastructure construction, a severe winter and shifts in global liner networks.
  • Revenues rose about 3% to €910.9 million helped by higher storage fees, showing some pricing and hinterland transport strength even as terminal handling fell sharply.
  • The results sharpen political scrutiny of the near-50/50 ownership with MSC through the Port of Hamburg Beteiligungsgesellschaft and raise the stakes for delivering promised cargo growth and finished automation to restore competitiveness.
