HGV Fire Keeps Busy Staffordshire Link Road Closed

Agencies are assessing heat damage to the carriageway with checks for possible contamination delaying reopening of the A460.

Overview

  • An HGV loaded with toilet rolls caught fire on Cannock Road early Thursday, the trailer becoming well alight and producing heavy smoke.
  • Fire crews from Staffordshire and supporting West Midlands teams extinguished the blaze and reported no injuries after attending in the early hours.
  • Police closed the A460 between the M54 and M6 and blocked connecting roads while residents were urged to keep windows shut because of smoke.
  • The Environment Agency and National Highways have joined Staffordshire County Council crews to inspect the road surface and check for runoff or contamination.
  • Highways teams are carrying out resurfacing work before reopening the route which serves as a key link between the M54 and M6 and has caused widespread local disruption.
