HGV Driver Gets 10 Years for M62 Crash That Killed Two Ryanair Pilots

Evidence showed he approached queued traffic at about 56mph in torrential rain before braking less than a second prior to impact.

Overview

  • Anthony Burns, 63, admitted two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and one of causing serious injury, and must serve two-thirds of a 10-year term before parole eligibility.
  • The collision killed Jamie Fernandes, 24, and Matthew Greenhalgh, 28, when their taxi was crushed between lorries on the westbound M62 between junctions 8 and 7.
  • Police and court evidence found no phone use or intoxication, with stationary traffic visible for at least 500 metres and advisory matrix signs reducing speeds to 40mph.
  • The judge cited torrential rain, surface water and spray, ruling Burns’ speed was inappropriate for conditions; he was also disqualified from driving and must pass an extended retest.
  • Taxi driver Rashid Mehmood survived with serious injuries, and Ryanair and the families announced a memorial plaque, an annual cadet award, and plans for a scholarship trust.
