HGTV Star Heather Rae El Moussa Diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease

Reality TV star experienced severe fatigue postpartum, initially attributing symptoms to 'mommy brain' before diagnosis; now sees improvement after medication.

  • HGTV's Heather Rae El Moussa was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune disorder that causes fatigue and weight gain, among other symptoms. This happened four months postpartum, when she initially attributed her intense fatigue and dramatic drop in milk supply to 'mommy brain.'
  • El Moussa's struggles were impacting her professional life as she was barely able to get out of bed on filming days for shows like 'The Flipping El Moussas' and 'Selling Sunset,' where she plays major roles.
  • When the increased fatigue persisted and her milk supply dropped drastically, El Moussa consulted with a lactation consultant who suggested she get blood work done. The test results confirmed the Hashimoto's disorder diagnosis. The disease had taken a toll on her breastfeeding routine, as it was the cause of her depleting breast milk.
  • Aside from the severe fatigue resulting from Hashimoto's disease, El Moussa was also grappling with difficulties breastfeeding her son Tristan who had a tongue tie, cheek tie, and lip tie, further complicating her postpartum period.
  • After her diagnosis, El Moussa was prescribed medication to treat the disease and has reported that she’s been 'feeling much better' since starting her treatment.
