Hezly Rivera Withdraws From U.S. Worlds Selection After Ankle Injury

An ankle sprain in training led her to prioritize recovery with an eye on a 2026 return.

Overview

  • The reigning U.S. champion and Paris 2024 team gold medalist announced Friday that she rolled her ankle and will not compete at the Crossville, Tennessee selection event.
  • Her withdrawal rules her out of the 2025 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta, scheduled for Oct. 19–25, where only individual titles will be awarded.
  • The selection camp begins Sept. 30 in Crossville, with the top all-around finisher on Tuesday earning automatic qualification and three additional members to be named after the two-day event.
  • With Rivera out, contenders Leanne Wong and Joscelyn Roberson are viewed as front-runners, and gymnasts such as Jayla Hang and Ashlee Sullivan have clearer paths to the four-woman team.
  • Rivera, 17, said she is disappointed but will cheer for Team USA from home as she focuses on rehab and a planned comeback in 2026.
