Hessen Mobil Launches Winter Road Service With 1,000 Staff and 90,000 Tonnes of Salt

Wet-salt spreading plus digital tracking support a preventive plan to keep priority roads moving.

Overview

  • Officials kicked off the season in Lauterbach with about 1,000 personnel and roughly 390 spreader and plow vehicles to maintain 15,200 kilometers of federal, state and district roads.
  • Around 90,000 tonnes of salt are stocked across 46 depots statewide after 65,000 tonnes were used last winter.
  • Feuchtsalz is being deployed as a 70% de-icing salt and 30% brine mix with computer-controlled dosing, and a public Salzticker shows consumption.
  • Crews typically operate from about 3:00 to 22:00 with a target to have key routes passable by 6:00, using preventive treatments guided by DWD forecasts.
  • Prioritization places major corridors first and clears some cycle paths only if deemed traffic‑critical, while drivers are urged to winterize vehicles, slow down and keep distance.
