Hessen Confirms Documenta 16 to Proceed as Scheduled for 2027

Despite past controversies and leadership changes, preparations for the next major art exhibition remain on track.

Hessens Kunstminister Timon Gremmels has confirmed that the Documenta 16 art exhibition will take place from June 12 to September 19, 2027.
The decision follows discussions about a potential one-year delay due to antisemitism controversies surrounding Documenta 15 in 2022.
A new curatorial committee was appointed in July 2024 after the previous one resigned amid allegations, and it is tasked with selecting a new artistic director by early 2025.
The preparation period for Documenta 16 has been shortened to two and a half years, but organizers believe this timeframe is sufficient.
Documenta, held every five years in Kassel, Germany, is considered one of the most significant contemporary art exhibitions, alongside the Venice Biennale.
