Hertha BSC Lets Smarsch Join AC Horsens as Heide Steps Up to No. 2

The club honored a promise to help the Berlin-born goalkeeper find more playing time.

Overview

  • Hertha confirmed that backup goalkeeper Dennis Smarsch, 26, has transferred to Danish second-tier side AC Horsens.
  • Sporting director Benjamin Weber said Hertha had agreed last year to allow Smarsch to move if a better chance for minutes emerged.
  • Smarsch called the switch a decision for his career, said he will keep following Hertha, and left open a possible return one day.
  • Hertha has lined up 19-year-old U17 World Cup winner Konstantin Heide as the replacement, with BILD reporting a €50,000 fee to sign him from Unterhaching.
  • Heide recently featured for Hertha’s U23s and will serve as the backup to first-choice goalkeeper Tjark Ernst, while Smarsch made one 2. Bundesliga appearance last season against Hannover.
