Overview
- Heretic Coffee, a volunteer-run nonprofit in Southeast Portland, is now serving free breakfasts to people at risk of losing SNAP benefits after moving up its start date.
- Donations jumped from about $86,000 on Tuesday to more than $200,000 by Wednesday afternoon, according to owner Josh White.
- White said a child’s request for food prompted him to launch service immediately rather than wait until Nov. 1.
- The shop has been flooded with volunteer applications and is continuing to accept donations through its Instagram link.
- Other local eateries, including GeekEasy Anime Cafe, Nan’s Taqueria and Vancouver’s Creekside BBQ, have pledged free or pay-it-forward meals as the shutdown continues.
