Herald Backs Culpepper as Boston’s District 7 Race Tightens Ahead of Election

Voters are weighing credibility after a corruption case left the seat vacant.

Overview

  • After a recount of the Sept. 9 preliminary, Said “Coach” Ahmed led Miniard Culpepper 1,170 to 1,112, setting up a razor-thin general election.
  • Culpepper now counts endorsements from the Boston Herald, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, DA Kevin Hayden, the Boston Teachers Union and the Boston Globe.
  • Campaign filings show Culpepper held about $33,000 in cash on hand to Ahmed’s nearly $16,000, per OCPF reports.
  • The candidates share positions on rent control, tenant-to-ownership programs, an elected school committee and stepped-up enforcement near Mass. and Cass, but they split on supervised injection sites.
  • Some former contenders and residents question the finalists’ preparedness and plan write-ins, noting both failed to name Boston’s chief of planning at a recent forum.
