Helms Bakery to Close in Culver City After One-Year Revival

Sang Yoon cited changed dining habits with sustained economic pressures as making the large-scale revival unsustainable.

Overview

  • The final day of service is Dec. 14, according to Yoon’s Instagram announcement posted Dec. 4.
  • Reopened in November 2024 at its original Helms Avenue site, the project marked the brand’s first return since the 1969 shutdown.
  • The 14,000-square-foot concept featured a hot bar, fresh pastries, grab-and-go sandwiches, and a retail area, while a planned adjacent sit-down restaurant never opened.
  • The shutdown lands during a difficult year for Los Angeles hospitality, with other closures reported and the Helms Bakery District losing anchor retailer HD Buttercup in September.
  • Yoon recently closed the Arts District location of Father’s Office, while the Santa Monica and Culver City bars remain open, and he has not announced plans for a new Helms location.
