Helios to Close Inpatient Services at Zerbst Hospital on Dec. 19, Affecting 270 Employees

State and county officials have opened talks with Helios to secure local medical provision.

Overview

  • Helios says the medical care center and other outpatient offerings will remain and could be expanded, with weekday gynecology, orthopedics, surgery, gastroenterology and radiology continuing.
  • Helios, the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district and Saxony-Anhalt’s health ministry agreed to further discussions, including exploring more general practitioner capacity and longer MVZ opening hours.
  • Staff were briefed on Monday, and the company plans to discuss redeployment opportunities at other Helios locations with all affected employees, according to management and the works council.
  • Once inpatient beds close, emergency patients transported by ambulance will be directed to surrounding hospitals, a company spokesperson said.
  • Local leaders and unions criticized the decision and its timing; Zerbst’s mayor voiced anger, the Left Party warned of lasting gaps citing Genthin and Havelberg closures, and Verdi said it was not consulted.
