Overview

  • On June 8, a government-chartered MI-17 helicopter evacuated 28 civilians, including three minors, from Chaten where landslides had severed road access.
  • A separate sortie returned 20 army personnel safely to Pakyong Greenfield Airport after the June 1 landslide at the military camp killed three soldiers and left six others unaccounted for.
  • Heavy monsoon rains since May 30 have triggered multiple landslides and flash floods across North Sikkim, disrupting roads and telecommunication networks.
  • Earlier this week, coordinated road and air operations rescued about 2,000 tourists stranded in Lachen, Lachung and Chungthang towns.
  • The state government, backed by the Army, BRO and NDRF, is now focused on reopening the LachenChungthang road corridor and delivering essential supplies.
