Heinenoord Tunnel Overflow Triggers A29 Lane Closures, Reopening Expected Shortly

Rijkswaterstaat reports the firefighting-water basin problem is fixed with reopening expected within about half an hour.

Overview

  • Water on the roadway came from the tunnel’s bluswaterkelder, a reservoir kept ready for use in case of a fire.
  • Two of three lanes toward Rotterdam were closed, causing roughly 9–10 kilometers of queue and delays of more than an hour.
  • ANWB advised drivers to detour via the A59, A17 and A16 during the restrictions.
  • Rijkswaterstaat later said the basin issue was resolved and indicated the tunnel could be fully open around 15:15.
  • The reason the firefighting-water storage overfilled remains unclear based on initial reports.
