Commuters in Bengaluru were in a fix as traffic chaos intensified in Hebbal on Monday morning as Karnataka's leadership chose to have a peak-hour ceremony after a long weekend to inaugurate the new flyover loop.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Siddaramaiah opened the 700‑metre, ₹80 crore loop on August 18, with Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar riding a vintage Yezdi on the new ramp.
  • The peak‑hour ceremony caused long jams at Hebbal Junction, drawing public criticism, including from BJP MP Tejasvi Surya who said he was stuck for nearly 50 minutes.
  • Traffic police and commuters reported shorter travel times on the flyover after opening, with some peak‑hour crossings dropping from over 20 minutes to about 10 minutes.
  • Officials and ground checks flagged fresh choke points near Mekhri Circle and at bus‑stop merge zones, with road‑widening and traffic‑management fixes now underway.
  • Shivakumar announced a second loop targeted for November, a 1.5‑km local tunnel between Esteem Mall and Baptist Hospital, and tenders for a 16.5‑km tunnel project estimated at about ₹17,000 crore.
