Heavy Traffic Expected on Alpine Routes as Winter Travel Peaks

ADAC warns travelers of significant delays due to winter holidays, construction, and weather conditions on major routes to ski destinations.

The start of winter holidays in Saxony and the northern Netherlands, alongside the end of holidays in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is expected to cause heavy traffic on key travel routes this weekend.
Major delays are anticipated on highways leading to the Alps, including the A8, A9, A93, and A99 in Germany, as well as the Brenner and Tauern routes in Austria and the Gotthard route in Switzerland.
Additional disruptions in Munich are expected due to road closures and public transit rerouting for the Munich Security Conference from February 14 to 16.
Snowfall and construction on Alpine routes, such as the Brennerautobahn in Austria, are likely to exacerbate delays for skiers heading to or returning from resorts.
Travelers are advised to carry winter essentials, including snow chains, warm clothing, and emergency supplies, and to adhere to traffic rules such as forming a rescue lane in case of congestion.
