Heavy Rains Sweep Mexico With Cyclone Watch Off Guerrero and Cold Fronts Nearing

SMN warns of hazardous downpours through midweek driven by the Mexican monsoon, tropical waves and early season fronts.

Overview

  • SMN forecasts very strong to intense rainfall of 75–150 mm in Guerrero, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Tabasco, Chiapas and Campeche, with additional heavy storms across much of the west, center and southeast.
  • A low‑pressure area south of Guerrero and Oaxaca is under monitoring for possible cyclonic development that could enhance rainfall along the Pacific coast and into central states.
  • Between Monday and Wednesday, a cold front is expected to enter Baja California and another will approach the northern border, bringing strong winds, showers and storms to northern and northeastern regions.
  • In the Valley of Mexico, Sunday’s storms flooded major avenues and slowed Metro service on Lines 3, 4, 5 and 8, as CDMX risk management officials maintained yellow alerts in seven southern boroughs.
  • Regional agencies in the Yucatán Peninsula warned of moderate to strong storms with electrical activity, including expected rain in Mérida between 14:00 and 18:00, and urged residents to follow Protección Civil guidance.
