Overview

  • Parts of Chennai, including Nungambakkam, Adyar, Raja Annamalaipuram and Vadapalani, recorded about 4–5 cm of rain between 5 am and the time of the RMC report.
  • The morning downpour caused waterlogging and traffic disruptions, with ongoing metro construction worsening drainage in some areas.
  • The IMD’s Tamil Nadu office placed Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Cuddalore under an orange alert for Friday.
  • The forecast says thunderstorms with lightning could occur at one or two places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal through August 23.
  • Municipal workers were reportedly deployed to clear water from key roads as the showers exceeded earlier guidance that had pointed to lighter rain.
