Monsoon Subsidence Halts Two Lines on Vital Lumding–Badarpur Rail Link

The corridor serving Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and southern Assam now runs on a single monitored track with no date set for full restoration.

Overview

  • Heavy rains caused soil to subside under two of three tracks near New Harangajao, damaging about 300 metres and forcing NFR to suspend Line 1 and Line 2 while operating only through Line 3 under constant monitoring.
  • NFR has barred passenger trains at night between 7:00 pm and 5:00 am and cancelled or rescheduled several services, including the Guwahati–Silchar Express, to prioritise safety during ongoing repairs.
  • Separate repair efforts reopened flood-damaged tracks at Simaluguri this week and restored limited services, with diesel locomotives used initially because many flood-affected residents remain sheltering on or near the rails.
  • Railway authorities have deployed more than 700 personnel and heavy machinery in phased restoration work and are running diverted routes and special trains via Moranhat and North Lakhimpur–Rangapara North–Rangiya to keep passengers and supplies moving.
  • The disruption hits a single strategic corridor that links four northeastern states to the rest of India, worsening humanitarian strain for tens of thousands of displaced people and delaying delivery of essentials such as foodgrains, fuel and construction materials.
