Heavy Rain Batters Kerala as IMD Issues Orange and Yellow Alerts
IMD says a Bay of Bengal weather system driving the showers is forecast to strengthen into a depression with landfall near the South Odisha–North Andhra Pradesh coast this weekend.
Overview
- Central and southern Kerala recorded widespread downpours on September 25, including 80 mm at Lower Sholayar (Thrissur), 68 mm at Pathanamthitta, 55 mm at Karumadi (Alappuzha), and 29 mm in Thiruvananthapuram.
- IMD placed Pathanamthitta and Idukki on orange alert for very heavy rain, with yellow alerts for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Palakkad.
- A yellow alert has been issued for eight districts on Friday, September 26—Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Thrissur—with seven districts in central and north Kerala on yellow alert Saturday.
- Under the cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, a low-pressure area is likely to form within about 12 hours, intensify into a depression on Friday, and cross the South Odisha–North Andhra Pradesh coast on Saturday morning.
- IMD expects the intensity of rain in Kerala to subside after the system moves inland, and it reported rain across Lakshadweep as authorities advise residents to remain cautious.
