Heatstroke From Scalding Bath and Intoxication Ruled Cause in Brazil Couple’s Motel Deaths

A medical examiner cited exogenous poisoning from extreme heat after a day of drinking.

Overview

  • Chief Medical Examiner Andressa Boer Fronza on October 1 concluded both deaths resulted from heatstroke with intense dehydration that led to organ failure.
  • Investigators reported bathwater near 50°C with a space heater running, conditions they say produced rapid thermal collapse.
  • Toxicology found very high blood alcohol levels and traces of cocaine, which officials say could have dulled reactions to the dangerous heat.
  • Civil Police issued 16 forensic reports covering the room, the couple’s car and CCTV, ruling out electric shock, drowning, carbon monoxide or third-party involvement.
  • Jeferson Luiz Sagaz, 37, and Ana Carolina Silva, 41, were found on August 12 in São José after failing to collect their 4-year-old daughter, who is now in relatives’ care as family members dispute claims of habitual drug use.
